Step 1: Get Your Inner Line Permit (ILP) Before You Leave
The Inner Line Permit is mandatory for all Indian citizens visiting Arunachal Pradesh — including bikers. There are no exceptions. ILP checkpoints exist at every major Assam-Arunachal border crossing, and riding through without one can result in being turned back, fined, or detained.

Foreign passport holders require a Protected Area Permit (PAP), not an ILP. This requires more lead time (1–2 weeks minimum) and must be applied through authorised travel agencies or the Ministry of Home Affairs. Some areas near borders require additional permissions regardless of nationality.
Route Options from North Lakhimpur
The Ziro route is the most accessible Arunachal Pradesh motorcycle trip from North Lakhimpur. From the city, you head northwest on NH-415, crossing into Arunachal Pradesh near Banderdewa (first ILP checkpoint). The road then climbs steadily through increasingly beautiful foothills before arriving at the wide, flat Ziro Valley — one of Northeast India's most scenic and culturally rich destinations.
Road quality is generally good, with some rough patches near Hija and on the last 20 km approach to Zero town. A commuter or 150cc bike handles this route comfortably. The round trip can be done in a comfortable two-day ride, spending one night in Ziro town or at a homestay in an Apatani village.
Itanagar is a straightforward highway ride from North Lakhimpur — the most beginner-friendly Arunachal trip you can take on a rented bike. Follow NH-415 south to Banderdewa, then continue on NH-415 to Itanagar. The road is paved and relatively flat the whole way, making it suitable for any bike in our fleet including smaller commuters.
Itanagar itself offers the 14th-century Ita Fort, Nehru Museum, Ganga Lake, and good food options. Easy day trip or comfortable overnight. ILP required at the Banderdewa checkpoint.
Pasighat, the adventure capital of Arunachal Pradesh, sits at the confluence of the Siang River and the foothills. The route from North Lakhimpur follows Assam's highway south before crossing into Arunachal through the Jonai area. Some sections involve forest roads with variable surface conditions depending on the season.
Pasighat is excellent for river rafting on the Siang — one of the most exciting white-water experiences in India. Plan at least one full day in Pasighat for the river. The return can take a different route via Dhemaji for variety.
Tawang is the ultimate Arunachal Pradesh motorcycle adventure — and one of the most rewarding rides in India. The route from North Lakhimpur takes you west through Assam's Sonitpur district to Bhalukpong (first ILP checkpoint for Tawang route), then climbs dramatically through Bomdila and over Sela Pass at 13,700 feet before descending to Tawang at 10,000 feet. Allow 2 full days for the ride each way, with an overnight stop at Bomdila or Dirang.
Road conditions on the Tawang route vary significantly. The highway from Assam to Bhalukpong is good. Beyond Bhalukpong, the road becomes a mix of paved and rough sections, with active landslide zones particularly between Sela Pass and Tawang. Always check road conditions before departing, especially from October to March when snow is possible at Sela Pass.
The Tawang route is not suitable for beginners or small commuter bikes. You need experience with mountain riding, altitude awareness, and handling a loaded bike on narrow, uneven roads. A powerful motorcycle (150cc+ minimum, 200cc+ recommended) with good braking is essential. Always depart early to avoid riding mountain passes in the dark or in deteriorating weather conditions.
Choosing the Right Bike for Your Route
- Itanagar / Ziro (easy route): Any commuter or 100–150cc bike works well. Good roads, no significant altitude gain. Fuel efficient option for budget riders.
- Pasighat (moderate): A 150cc+ bike is recommended. Some rough forest road sections require slightly more power and ground clearance.
- Tawang (challenging): A powerful 200cc+ adventure motorcycle with good ground clearance. Do not attempt Tawang on a small commuter bike — the altitude and road conditions demand more. Call us to discuss options before booking.
Fuel Stops on Arunachal Pradesh Routes
Fuel availability drops significantly once you cross into Arunachal Pradesh, especially on less-travelled routes. Key rule: always fill up at the last major town before crossing into Arunachal and at every opportunity inside the state.
- Ziro route: Fill in North Lakhimpur. Next reliable pump is in Zero/Hapoli town. Smaller pumps exist en route but don't rely on them.
- Itanagar route: Fill in North Lakhimpur and available at Naharlagun. Itanagar has multiple pumps.
- Tawang route: Fill in Tezpur (Assam), Bhalukpong, and Bomdila. Fuel at Dirang is available but prices are higher. Beyond Dirang, no guaranteed fuel until Tawang town.
Best Time for an Arunachal Bike Trip from North Lakhimpur
- October–November: Best overall. Post-monsoon roads, clear skies, moderate temperatures. Ideal for all routes including Tawang.
- December–February: Cold, especially at altitude. Sela Pass can be snowed in and closed intermittently. Ziro and Itanagar routes remain fine. Tawang possible but unpredictable.
- March–April: Rhododendrons in full bloom at altitude. Comfortable temperatures. Good for all routes.
- June–September (Monsoon): Not recommended for mountain routes. Heavy rain causes frequent landslides on Tawang road. Ziro and Itanagar routes are manageable but wet. Check before riding.
